Why just a carry-on? Well, if you’re only heading out for a few days, the pros of only taking hand-luggage far outweigh the difficulty of adding a checked bag to the mix.
You can breeze through the airport quicker, you won’t need to worry about lost luggage (imagine getting to a make or break meeting without your planned outfit), and you can keep your hands free if you opt for a formal backpack which is highly in fashion for business travellers at the moment.
Smart backpacks are also lifesavers when it comes to that dash through the airport when you’re running late, and most have easy-access to a built-in laptop sleeve so you don’t have to rummage around to find your laptop or iPad.

One of the perks of only having hand-luggage is that you don’t overpack things like your cosmetics and showercare; you can really invest and think about what you want to take. There are so many high-end and luxury brands out there like LUSH who are embracing the zero-waste movement, meaning that luxury solid cosmetics like deodorant, skincare, and haircare, are more readily available, even in the airport!
And you can always rely on your hotel to deliver if there is something you’ve forgotten. It’s nice to have a change of scent sometimes.
Gone are the days where you have to carry an envelope around with you to squirrel away your expense receipts. If you’re in business and you don’t have an expenses app like Veryfi, it’s time to update to digital and save yourself some space (and time).
And, speaking of avoiding mess, wireless headphones might be the way forward too, as they take up way less space and you’ll never get that dreaded tangle again.
Let’s face it: we don’t need four changes of clothes for a two day trip, or three pairs of shoes! One comfortable, smart pair of shoes might do the trick for your meeting, your travel, and everything in between.
And when it comes to packing smart – have you heard of packing cubes? They’re an amazing way of keeping everything organised. It’s a travel game-changer. Trust us.
We’ve already mentioned expense apps, but they aren’t the only digital tech that’s revolutionised the travel world. How about a charging station that does it all, going paperless with your travel documents and, of course, your portable USB and laptop chargers for when you can’t get a mains connection.
We couldn’t not mention the business trip packing essentials, just in case there’s something important you’ve forgotten. And, yes, you can fit it all into the carry-on! You just need to pack smart (see above!):
And…
Always, always pack swimwear.
It doesn’t take up much space and you never know when you might want to take advantage of a surprise infinity pool.
This list is certainly not exhaustive. Perhaps you know you’ll need a sleeping mask, or mosquito spray. Pack what you need, but don’t overpack!
P.S. don’t forget a carabiner attachable water bottle and coffee cup – this way you can just clip them both to the outside of your bag when you need your hands free, and you’re helping the planet by avoiding that extra plastic!
